WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE
THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO COLLATE EVERYTHING FROM MY FACEBOOK GROUP INTO EASY DISCOVERABLE SECTIONS - HOPEFULLY IT WORKS
MY THANKS TO CAROL BENSLEY FOR THE BANNER WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY CREATED FOR THE NOW DEFUNCT FORUM WE HAD A WHILE BACK.
I'M NOT SURE HOW THE FORUM WORKS BUT MAYBE SOMEONE WILL WORK IT OUT AND START US OFF WITH A SUBJECT OR TWO - IN THE MEANTIME I'LL TRY TO SUSS IT OUT
In May 2011 I suffered a heart attack which put me out of sorts and out of work for some time. It made me give up smoking after 40 years - something I did with some ease, no tablets, patches or gum, I just stopped. I was in hospital, didn't take any smokes with me, no one left me money to buy any so that was it. When I came home, if it can be called that any more, (another story ) - I didn't have the urge to spark up so I didn't bother.
My recuperation was spent mostly on the internet - Facebook to be precise - but even that got frustrating ! Repetitive statuses of " Now having a fag" and "Going for a Beer" were forcing me away from the damn thing.
Then one evening I was reading a book and a mention of the Hippodrome Circus popped up and I thought " I remember that"
Then further in the book a mention of my old junior school, Nelson on St. Peters Road, and it made me wonder about friends and teachers who used to be there. So onto Facebook to seek out an old schoolfriend and ask some questions. The night soon became early morning and I decided to create a small group, add a few friends, ask a few questions and post some old photos to look/laugh at. This I did and the group was
GREAT YARMOUTH & SURROUNDINGS - THE GOOD OLD DAYS - 1960 ONWARDS
I gave it that name as the people I was planning to add would have been born in 1957, 1958 and 1959 so it would have covered our formative years growing up in Great Yarmouth. We bandied questions back and forth for a couple of days adding the odd new member who had been "found" amongst our friend lists.
On the third day of the groups existence, I turned on the PC and logged in and was surprised to see that there were 470+ people requesting to join the group !!! Now I knew some of these people, I had heard of some of these people and I knew some of the original group members knew some of these people. I added them all and the group began to flourish with members adding their own personal memories and photos.
Soon we had reached 1000 members and unfortunately some grief occurred when a "rogue" member reported the group for some unsavoury and racist comments. Eventually I managed to find out that it was in fact the complainant who had made the racist comments and with his departure the group got back on track.
So here we are two and a half years down the line and new members are still being added to the group and "new" old photographs and memories are being discussed. A cut off date of 1980 as the upper limit remains but with the introduction of - shall we say - more senior members I had to relinquish the early cut off date of 1960 and extend the earliest memory as having no date limit.
So now I have progressed to this site - I hope to collate all of the photographs added to the GY&S page into some form of Categories to make them easier to find. Eventually I will move all of the files and documents that have been created to this site also.
I'm still learning but I will get there in the end - I hope I have the support of the majority of the GY&S members and they will all be invited to join this site and take advantage of the Forums which will also be added.
For those who have stumbled across this site - a link to the Facebook group is on the home page - top right hand side.
